I do not recommend actively joining programs directly with merchants. Why? Because there wouldn't be any third party monitoring earnings or verifying claims of past payouts. In essence you're forced to take a site on their word. An affiliate network will ensure each company you promote has a good standing with minimal complaints. Unfortunately, many people tell stories of being burned after delivering customers to sites for a supposed commission. Casino and Adult sites have the worst reputation regarding this. But mainly it's just too time consuming to join directly with each site individually.
